One wedding tradition that is both anticipated and dreaded in equal measures is the thought of giving a wedding speech. You don’t have to stress out over them though. If you take some time to plan properly in advance and listen to my advice, it will be much less stressful. Public speaking is not something that comes natural to most people.
A good wedding speech should be slightly humorous without crossing the line. They should not include off color humor or clichés as they often do. Let’s look at two different speeches that are common at weddings.
Father of the Bride Speech
This speech is often times among the first speeches given at any wedding reception. This can be a time to offer a heartfelt speech proposing happiness and health for your daughter and her new husband. Because of their maturity and previous experience at weddings, dads tend to know what is appropriate and what is not. They can usually make a small joke without it coming out wrong. Most dads avoid the jokes and just stick with the traditional welcome to the family speech.
Best Man’s Speech
I can’t tell you how many times I have personally seen the best man deliver totally inappropriate words during his speech. Usually the younger the best man is the more likely he is to say things that are simply inappropriate. If you are a groom reading this, then make sure you ask your best man not do say inappropriate things. Remind him that the best place to roast you is during your bachelor party and certainly not during a formal event like your wedding reception. Young guys simply do not get it. It seems some guys don’t actually grow up until they hit forty years old.
If you are the best man in someone’s upcoming wedding, then take this moment to realize that you are being given an opportunity to give your best friends one of the best gifts a man could give. You are going to make those two people look like they are the two most important people on earth. You are going to fill their hearts with gladness and pride that they have chosen the perfect person to be their friend. Do not squander your opportunity to make them feel like king and queen for the day. They deserve it.
